Fernando Santos stepped down as Portugal coach on Thursday. He made the decision after the team’s World Cup quarter-final loss to Morocco. Now the controversial Jose Mourinho could be named the new coach of Portugal. Portugal’s football federation said in a statement that an agreement had been reached with 68-year-old Santos, adding that “the successful journey that began in September 2014 is now coming to an end”. The FPF said it would “now begin the process of selecting the next national coach”. According to media reports, before Euro 2024, the federation wants to make Mourinho the new coach of Portugal.
The Portuguese Football Federation will negotiate an agreement, on the basis of which Mourinho can be given the responsibility of coach of the Portugal national team. He will also be able to work for his club Roma in Italy. Mourinho, who attended Roma’s training camp, did not answer questions about becoming Portugal’s coach. The qualifying rounds for Euro 2024 will begin in March.
